Nevada City Film Festival Winter Comedy Show presents An Evening with Maria Bamford plus special guest Jackie Kashian, Saturday, March 26, at the historic Nevada Theatre, 410 Broad Street, Nevada City, CA.
This year’s Winter Comedy Show spans two evenings, Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, and features live stand up comedy, podcasts, and more. The full-lineup will be announced on March 1.
Over the last several years Maria Bamford has become one of the most acclaimed and original stand-up comics in the country. Described as “the most unique, bizarre, imaginative comedian out there,” by Judd Apatow, Bamford draws much of her inspiration from her Minnesotan family, as well as her own struggle with anxiety, OCD, and depression.
She is the creator and star of Maria Bamford: the special special special and of the cult hit web series The Maria Bamford Show, which screened at the Museum of Art and Design. She is the first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the Comedy Central series The Comedians of Comedy and Netflix’s Comedians of Comedy: The Movie.
Bamford voices characters on numerous animated series including BoJack Horseman, Adventure Time, Legend of Korra, Puss in Boots and PBS’s Emmy-winning series Word Girl. She can also be heard voicing lead roles on Fox’s upcoming Golan the Insatiable and Yahoo’s upcoming Talking Tom & Friends.
Bamford recurred as DeBrie Bardeaux on Netflix’s Arrested Development reboot for which she was praised as “fantastic” (Entertainment Weekly) a “standout” (TIME) and “perhaps one of the high points of the entire new season” (Black Book Magazine). She also recurred on FX’s critically praised Louis, ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat and USA’s Benched.
Bamford’s new Netflix series, Lady Dynamite was created by Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development) and Pam Brady (South Park). It premieres May 20th.
Opening the show is Jackie Kashian. “Jackie Kashian’s comedy is like listening to a really racy episode of All Things Considered.” She is a national touring comic with a new hour standup special “This Will Make an Excellent Horcrux.” She’s appeared on the Conan O’Brien show, Comedy Central’s @midnight and has recorded This American Life with Ira Glass for NPR. Her critically acclaimed podcast, The Dork Forest, is in its 10th year. She interviews all and sundry about the things they love.
Dubbed the “the Sundance of the Sierra”, the Nevada City Film Festival is best known for bringing top independent cinema to the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Eight years ago, the Festival introduced the Live Comedy Show during the weekend’s summer festivities.
The event quickly took off with a string of sell-outs and a who’s who list of up and coming comedians. The Nevada City Film Festival comedy shows have included such famous (and infamous) comedians as Tig Notaro (This American Life, Transparent), Marc Maron (Maron Show, WTF Podcast), Nick Kroll (Kroll Show, The League), Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job), Neil Hamburger, Natasha Leggero (Last Comic Standing), and Eric Andre (Eric Andre show), just to name a few.
